I am looking for information about John McKinnell, probably born 1812 in Auchinleck. He was the school mster from 1839-1844. After the Disruption in the Church, Mr. McKinnell was school master of the Free School from 1843 until 1862, when he resigned because of ill health. At some point after 1862 he moved to San Francisco where he died in 1890. I would love to know any information about the McKinnells. Thank you, Susan

I am the great great grandson of Alex Sandy Tait, born Glenbuck 1871. I am visiting the Glenbuck area for two days towards the end of June 2010. I would be interested to hear from anyone with advice on best places to go relating to Glenbuck history. As well as family records from the area. Sandy was one of a large family and I would imagine there will be Tait family members still in the area. Thank you

Just found this site and noticed an entry from my brother John! Brought back memories of a time when I was working in Cumnock (1977 - 1982). I remember as a "Junior" in the local Clydesdale Bank being sent out for cakes for tea breaks. Pineapple cakes had to come from Stevensons, Chelsea Buns from Stoddarts and Cumnock Tarts from McJannets. Made me think also about TL Murrays, the drapers shop, where my Mum worked as a book-keeper for many years. I remember school blazers and winter dufflecoats coming from here. It`s sad to see the disappearance of these family businesses. Those were the days.

We are trying to source any old photographs/film footage/memories of the Carnival and also trying to find if anyone knows when the last Carnival was in the town and who the Queen was. All information is greatly appreciated. Shaun

I see that Cumnock Picture House has now almost gone. Many a happy Saturday Morning Matinee I spent there in the 1960. The old horse chestnut tree next to it and the Town Hall has also been cut down, must have been at least 100 years old - anyone know why? Seems all the old buildings are disappearing fast and being replaced either with car parks or ugly modern office buildings. Something needs to be done to protect our heritage!

I am looking for additional information regarding my father`s side of the family (the Henderson`s). My Grandfather was born in around 1900 in Cumnock and immgrated to Canada in the early 1920`s. Actually the story was told that my Grandfather was sent to Canada to bring back his older brother William Henderson. I recall my Great Aunt Margaret Henderson who was born and died in Cumnock and never married. I don`t know if there were any other Henderson`s in Cumnock that I am related to? I do know that we are the Henderson`s of the Breckenridge and Henderson Taylors! I believe that the Henderson`s attended the Old Parish Church. If anyone has additional information regarding the Henderson`s of Cumnock, I would love to read any information that one might have! Sincerely Cynthia

I`ve just come across this site and It`s great to browse through. There`s a huge amount of info to enjoy. I`m surprised though that there`s nothing so far about the businesses of the McJannet Family, especially W&R McJannet Bakers (Wullie and Bert). Known to so many in Cumnock and the surrounding area, it would be good to see memories recorded of their lives and times.

Hi everyone, I am looking for a Mary Howat Ballantyne born about 1937 in Old Cumnock. She was the daughter of Mary Howat Ballantyne and William Stewart. (known as Bronc) Her mother Mary Sr married a Mr Kerr and went to live in Lanarkshire, passing away in 1981. Mary Sr was the daughter of James Ballantyne and Mary Howat, and had siblings Maggie, John, Janet, Annie and Andrew. Mary Sr may have worked as a bus conductoress. We think the younger Mary Howat Ballantyne may have married a John Campbell in 1963 in Old Cumnock. If anyone can help us track her down we would be very grateful.

Going through my late parents effects I found this poem. I seem to remember my Dad saying it was written by Jim Lorimer. On the back of the poem it says "And now Gentlemen, I ask you to arise and honour me by drinking to the toast `THE TOWNHEAD THISTLE" . The Men at the Fit o` the Incline It is no sae lang gane, jist a year of twa back When the Toonheid was jist in its prime That the men frae that street on each Sunday wad meet for a crack at the fit o` the incline Frae awa` doon the lan` up to Donaldson Braes, in by Greenholm, if ye can keep min` They was cross ower the steps and come roon by the Bing jist to meet at the fit o` th` incline. I will name them in fam`lies it`s a` I can dae for the chairman he`ll no gi`e me time To gi`e each his ain verse, as they a` weel deserve The guid men frae the fir o` th` incline. There were Nicols and Orrs, there were Kirks an` Muirheids, an` the Fergusons Stillies an` Humes The McCalls, Marrs an` Clarks, an` the Donaldsons tae, wi` the Camerons, Samsons an` Broons. There were Laidlaws, and Phinns, the McGees an` the Bairds, o` the Smiths there were twa of three kin An` when Sunday cam` roon a` these cronies was meet at the sate at the fit o` th` incline. Aye the first up was Nicol weel kent for his doos an` his black gypsy bitch wis aye there Sam could aye count on something to fill up the pot if his wee dug got sight o` a hare. Then came Tickey, an` Whitey, an` Baldy an` Punt wi` their pipes spewin` reek like a lum An` wee Kilsh wad come tae an" wad aye make his say o` the Thistle`s hard lines he wad bum Then Big Edam wad say your team canna ray but for Roughy the score wad been nine That wad stert aff the tare an` an argyment rare was tak place at the fit o` the incline. There`s anither wee chiel that I almost forgot Jimmy Kirk! I am share ye`ll ha`e min` His moustache was burnt broon wi` the fag`s that he smoked - he would smoke naethin` else but Woodbine. But the time has slipped by, and there`s no` mony left the auld sate has gane tae this lang syne But I aft times gang there to commune wi` the ghosts o` the men at the fit o` th` incline. Dad & his family lived at 106 Middle Row,Skares. If you look at that photo of the middle row you`ll see near the far end a furniture truck - that`s about where 106 was. Co-oincidentally, when my elder brother died just before Xmas way back in 1970 his burial plot turned out to be No.106.

My Mum is a mcHugh and her mother and aunt lived in Skares Row on and off for a number of years alongside a whole tribe of Shirkies! Elizabeth Shirkie McHugh 9My gran) lived at 47 Wylie Crescent (where I was born!) after they moved from Skares Rows. Be in touch soon Bobby

Can anyone tell me whether Skares School is still standing & if not when was it demolished? Since emigrating in 1963 I`ve made one trip back - in 1974. On that occasion I visited Skares & saw that where the rows used to be was just a big empty field & the School, from memory had all its windows boarded up - it appeared derelict. Nonetheless, I got my cousin from my old home town of Ardrossan to take my photo in front of the school at the same point Dad had his taken so many years previously by Uncle Andy.

Hi Shona re-your query about the Fairburn & Davidson families. I`d suggest you have a look at the Surnames section of the website http://www.williamdavidson.com/ It gave me my best start in family history research when I found my paternal grandfather listed & was able to work back from there to my 5x Great Grandfather. There are several Davidsons in my family tree. The website I mentioned is operated by Bill Davidson in Toronto in Canada. He`s descended from Lilias Jamison Bryden, sister of my 2x Great Grandfather,Stewart Bryden. As you`ll see, Lilias married David Bryden Davidson on 25 January 1839.Bill Davidson also co-ordinates a world wide group of family history researchers interested in Bryden, Davidson & a lot of other names besides so if you email him he can put you in touch with the rest of us & who knows where it might lead in your genealogical research. Good luck,

Regarding the name "SHIRKIE" that appears as part of my family tree.On 31 Dec.1906 Jessie Shields Davidson(b.24.31890) married Matthew Shirkie(b.31.12.1885).Jessie was a daughter of Montgomerie Bryden Davidson & Janet McMurray.M.B.Davidson was a son of Lilias Jamison Bryden & David Bryden Davidson.Lilias was a daughter of my 3x Great Grandparents,Montgomerie Bryden & Margaret Rowe & a sister to my 2x Great Grandfather,Stewart Bryden.I have 4 children recorded for Jessie & Matthew Shirkie - M.Shirkie,E.Shirkie,Matthew Shirkie & Mary Shirkie. Two final points - in the same class as Dad(Montgomerie Bryden) at Skares School was Jimmy Shirkie whose father was the Gaffer of my grandfather`s group of coal face miners at Whitehill Pit - grandfather being William McCulloch Bryden.

Just adding to my last message. My grandfather was William McCulloch Bryden & he was critically injured in a pit accident at Whitehill in 1924 & was never able to work again. My grandmother was instrumental in starting a branch of the Labour Party in Skares. Dad, Montgomerie Bryden, was born in Lugar. He`s now 93 & living next door to me here in New Zealand - we emigrated in 1963. My great grandfather, also Montgomerie Bryden also lived at one stage in one the Skares Rows - he was an engine keeper (not sure of the right term) & looked after the pithead machinery.Would be interested to hear from anyone who remembers the Brydens in Skares-that might be asking a bit much as Dad`s family moved to Kilmarnock in 1928.

The 3 pictures of Skares on the home page of the Cumnock Living Memory Group are family ones I originally sent to the East Ayrshire Family History Society. My father spent the first 12 years of his life there & that is him standing oin front of Skares School. In the middle row group the woman at the left hand end of the back row with a baby in her arms is my paternal grandmother - the baby is Dad`s younger brother,Andy. My grandfather was a coal face miner at Whitehill Pit. I`ve just discovered this website-glad I did.

many years ago,in fact during and after the war, in a placed called keir hardy hill, lived lots of lovely people who helped each other.when troop trains stopped at cumnock station, ladies ran up up with tea and sanwiches for the troops. later on mary jolly ran trips to the low green in the summer where sixteen double deckers landed youngsters on to the low gree with their tin mugs and bags of buns. these were the good old days. now people do not know who lives next door to them, we could name every family in the scheme, i wish those days could come back.120 keir hardy hill. allan mclean nottinghamshire.

My husband and I were having fun looking through our copy of Pictorial History of Cumnock. and I decided to try the internet for some uptodate Info. Found your site and it is great. I well remember all the places mentioned. The messages concerning the Lunis and the ice cream shop were particularly interesting. Their last shop that I knew about was on Glaisnock street a little up the hill from the Central Garage that used to be owned my father Charlie Ancell, I remember them as old Maria, young Maria, and Maria Pia. Maria Pia at three was a little dance student of mine. Her mother brought her to Broomhill, where my family, lived for lessons. Hope things in Cumnock are looking up. It is very special litle town. Sorry that the old swimming pool is gone. I used to run down the the hill and jump the stones accross the Lugar to go there all the time. Anyone from my old year at Cumnock Academy still around give me an email. My brilliant class mate May Blair(Patton) are you still in Cumnock?

re James Skillen. You and my brother Andrew Whyte were great friends. I remember you both disappearing one evening when you returned Andrew told my mum he had been in great church where you got something to eat! (communion!) I used to go to the Salvation Army in Townhead Street. Does anyone remember it? I started going as a wee girl and we started off in a delapidated wooden building before the new one was built (next to where Somerfields now is.

Hi all. I am hoping someone can help me. I am looking for my grandfathers parents. My grandfather was Robert John Mcgeachan. He was born in 1905. He lived in Greenock for a while. He had a sister move to Canada and a brother move to Australia. But I have no other information. His father was Robert William Mcgeachan and I think he lived in Fort William. I do not have any information on his wife. I really hope someone can help. Thanks

Mum stayed with a family called Mcquillian in Pattna ( sorry unsure of the spelling), Mum was friendly with a girl named BREDA MCPATE Mum also went to school with Breda , they lived & Mum was staying on the Ayr Road. The River Doon was at the bottom of the garden. We are wondering if there are any one around who may rember Mum & her two brothers, Mums name was Maureen Hallsworth, her two brothers are Charles ( known as Chas) & Ernest ( known as Ernie ) Chas is older than Mum & Ernie younger. My Grandmothers name was Mary Agnes Young, Her parents names were Robert & Jane Young nee Donachie, I also have names of Grans brothers & sisters. Please if this information sounds familiar to any one I would love to hear from them. I am trying to trace the family tree. If any family of the MCQUILLAN`S or the MCPATE`S are still around we would love to hear from them, Mum has asked me to say Hello to anyone who may rember her. Mum has a class photo of when she was at Waterside School. Thank you for taking the trouble to read this Rosemary.

Many thanks to Sam. It would appear then that it was in that simple farm building that my mother was born. How life has changed; she lived with kindness and a determined spirit that probably came from her experiences of those early days. Does anyone remember the Macleans of Barlonachan?

I was telling my family about the popularity of Cumock swimming pool in the 60s. I remember paying 10shillings for a season ticket. We could arrive at 8am and stay till 8pm! Pretty Flamingo played over the loudspeaker. The boys who were parading themselves by doing handstands etc hung out on the top left as you came through the turnstile. The whole family came to watch water polo matches. We moved away from Logan in 1968 when I was 16 years old. I loved that pool!

This has to said, due to a heart attack on sept 6 2007 a beloved husband, father and grandfather died aged only 52. Billy Drury was Auchinleck Academy`s janitor and also one of the best well known people within the towns of auchinleck and cumnock and even the surrounding towns. His character was loving and ever since the first day we met many years ago he never stopped making us laugh. He was very well respected and adored by many people within east ayrshire, and if there ever was time for two rival towns to come together, then this will be the chance. Billy will forever be remember in the hearts of many, and can never be replaced as a husband, father or grandfather and also importantly never be replaced as a janitor, there will never be anyone like him. R.I.P. my good friend, my love always.

I was the last Chief designer at Stonefield military vehicles in Strood kent working on a new design for Thailand that did not happen. Went bust before they got the contract. Would be pleased to discuss the vehicle or politics with anybody who worked with them or has an interest. Any working anywhere in the UK? The 2 fire engines at Alderney airport are no longer there - gone to Scotland I am told. PS I had nothing to do with the transfer of the facilities to Kent. Before my time.

Hi. I`m trying to locate any information on a miner who lived and worked for a while in Cumnock in years gone by. John Menzies, originally from Sanquhar and lived for many years in Kelloholm. He was good friends for many years with a Cumnock man Bill Cowan. He was my Grandfather and sadly passed away aged 94 last December (he was quite proud of the fact he was the 2nd oldest man in Kirkconnel). It`s a long shot with him being so old and having spent the majority of his life in the Sanquhar/Kirkconnel pits but I was wondering if anybody recalled the name or even had any interesting stories of my Grandfather

Message for William Treumann. John Baird and Agnes Howat seem to have married on 26th March 1851 in Kirkconnel, near Sanquhar (see IGI Website at www.familysearch.org). To see if they were in Kirkconnel on the census night of 1851 - please check the Historical Indexes on the Website at www.dumgal.gov.uk. I hope this helps in your search Cheers Anne Geddes

Dear Cumnock Living Memory Group, I was thrilled to find information for my good friend, Margaret who will be turning 91 this February and continues to recall memories of her time in Auld Cumnock from 1915-1928. She doesn`t have a computer so I know she will be excited to see all the information I was able to gather and print for her from this site. I`m sure she will have an even happier birthday because of your contributions to keeping memories and history alive. Thank you from Laura and Margaret--New York, USA

For Richard Greene

Did your relative David Craig leave a will? If he did you should be able to get a copy online at the pay per view Website at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

You should also try Websites relating to Stair (and Stair Parish) - as it is not part of Cumnock

My relative a David Craig a writer in Edinburgh was a servitor to the Earl of Stair about 1730 or so. I am interested in any details of David.

Hi, Great website. My Cumnock family were in both Cumnocks, & ended up in Australia in 1862. Names from the area are McClanachan (McLanachan), Robertson, Shankland, Stillie, Murdoch, Hannay. The McC / Lanachans farmed at Milzeoch farm, now a coal mine I believe. Cheers Carolyn cwcarolync@qld.chariot.net.au

Great website. My dad Barclay still goes down from Killie occasionally. The family lived on Emrys Ave since the 30s till quite recently. Back in the day they were at Barlonachan before moving in to Glaisnock St.. My grandpa Paterson married a Mulaney of Darnconner in the 20s. Anyone know anything about my gran`s dad? His name was Paddy Mulaney & was apparently an Irish fiddler & was listed on the 1881 census as a miner. My family history on that side stops dead with him. Hello to any Cossars or Butlers reading!!

Hi, I am looking for an old High School teacher. His name is Aidan McKellar and he taught Music. He was working at St Joseph`s Academy when I left school in 1979 and I was told he moved to teach in Cumnock (I am assuming St Convals but it could be another High School). I would love to get in touch with him, if you have any information, please send it on to me. thanks Lynn
