St. John's School Cumnock Chronicle. 1st November 1907. Opening of St. John’s New School. Description of the school
The school stands upon what was the playground of the old school, and facing Bank Avenue. Pressed brick has been used in its building, and as it has been rough-cast is presents a very solid and substantial appearance. The boys and girls enter at separate doors, and have separate cloakrooms etc. The main lobby is very wide and well lighted, and it is from this lobby or hall that the various classrooms, four in number, are reached. Each of these classrooms is large, airy and well lighted from the sides. Particular attention has been paid to heating and ventilation, which are both carried out on quite modern principles. The lavatory accommodation is all that could be desired. Altogether the school provides a very much improved addition to the scholastic institutions of this district.
The contractors were: - Messrs M. Muir & Co., Kilmarnock, for building; Mr J. Dalziel, Auchinleck, for joiner work; Messrs H. & T. Morrison, for plumber work and slating; Mr M. Taylor for plaster work; and Mr David White for painting.
The article above relates to the rebuilding of St. John`s School which was originally opened in 1886. A new St. John’s School was erected at Barshare in 1974 and the building described above is now used as the Barrhill Centre.
