Higher Grade School (Hillside House)Hillside House was put up for sale by the Crichton family in 1909 and was purchased by Cumnock School Board for £1500. It was converted for use as a Higher Grade School accommodating around 150 pupils and opened in 1911. An extension was added later as the school roll increased and this new building contained a dozen classrooms, staff rooms, science labs, and a gymnasium with a small swimming pool. The School roll in 1926 was 900 pupils and in 1927 it changed its name to Cumnock Academy. By 1948 it was the largest school in Ayrshire - with 1443 pupils. The older Hillside House section of the school was demolished in 1939 and another new building was added. With the building of a modern Academy in Ayr Road in the late 1960`s - the building became a primary school - and now operates as Greenmill Primary School.
