The Bell Tree

When the old Parish Church was demolished c1860 to make way for the present Parish Church, the old bell was removed from the spire and hung on an old tree in The Strand. It was rung daily at 5:30 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. by the bellman Hugh MACLELLAN. The bell became redundant when a new bell was donated to the new Church. It hung on the bell tree for eight years then was transferred to the belfry of the public school. The ornate bell dated from 1697 and was cast by Quirinus de Visscher of Rotterdam.
