HAVE YOU SEEN A GREY SQUIRREL THIS MONTH? - 15/02/2010
  • The numbers of grey squirrels, and their distribution in Ayrshire, seems to be increasing all the time. We need to have up to date information on their whereabouts so if you have seen a grey squirrel - perhaps for the first time in your area - please send us the details. The form can be found on our home page and just asks for basic information.
AGM 2010 - 07/03/2010
  • Our next AGM is to be on Thursday 18th March at the Green Room, SAC Auchencruive, Ayr. As well as the usual AGM business (which we will try to keep brief) there will be a talk,

` All you wanted to know about bats but were too scared to ask`

by Tom Hastings, Ayrshire Bat Group. The meeeting starts at 7 pm and all members and non-members are very welcome. We need your support to ensure the future of the red squirrel in Ayrshire.

SQUIRRELPOX VIRUS DESCRIPTION - 07/03/2010
  • The Squirrelpox virus remains a major threat to red squirrels in Scotland. A major outbreak at Thornhill last year was devastating to the red squirrel population there so we need to remain alert to its possible spread into Ayrshire. If you see any ill or diseased red squirrels please contact us immediately on enquiries@ayrshiredsquirrels.org.uk. This is an awful virus which has similarities to myximitosis in rabbits and causes skin ulcers, lesions, and scabs. It can also cause swelling and discharge (from the lesions/scabs) near the eyes, mouth, feet, and genitalia. Red squirrels are unlikely to survive more than a week or so once they have the disease. It is however harmless to the grey squirrels a large percentge of whom appear to be carrying it.
